A Van for Serge

I am creating the GoFundMe page on behalf of Serge LeGal and Serge’s Network.

Serge is a gentleman that lives life to his fullest ability. However, Serge has Cerebral Palsy.

What is CP? Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term that refers to a group of disorders affecting a person’s ability to move. It is due to damage to the developing brain either during pregnancy or shortly after birth.
Cerebral palsy affects people in different ways and can affect body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. Although cerebral palsy is a permanent life-long condition, some of these signs of cerebral palsy can improve or worsen over time.

People who have cerebral palsy may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy and intellectual impairments.

Serge is confined to a wheelchair and requires 24 hour care by a great team of staff that are his greatest advocates.

Serge has a van that he uses to get around to appointments and other daily activities. It allows him to participate in community activities as well as the daily life challenges such as grocery shopping. Some of the challenges that Serge would face by losing the use of his van would be, having to rely on Handi-transit which is challenging to secure, and using the Handi-taxis can be extremely costly. We would like to believe that Brandon is wheelchair accessible but a number of sidewalks and curbs are not wheelchair friendly which just adds to his normal day challenges. By having the use of his own van, Serge is able to stay in contact with his family members that live outside of Brandon. It allows Serge to feel more independent that many of us take for granted. It allows him to be part of the community through his various volunteer activities.
We are currently in the process of looking for a newer van (a gentlely used one) that can be adapted to Serge’s wheelchair and we are requesting your assistance.

Serge receives funding through Community Living Disability Services (CLDS) under the program ICOF (In Company of Friends), funds are limited and CLDS does not provide funding for vehicles. This makes the purchase of a van for Serge not easy without your help.

The problem is that his van is on its last leg or tires.
