Mi mother Amelia has always been a generous person; she has devoted her life to loving and caring for those around her and has had to overcome many challenges in her life. Her and my father, Manuel, were married for 56 years until he passed away nearly 2 years ago. Together they raised 4 children and gave sanctuary to my cousins when we were teenagers. Her home has always been open to those in need and many of our friends consider her an Honorary Aunt.
Professionally she has spent her entire career in preschool education. She has loved, cared for and mentored countless children until her retirement this year at 78 years of age. If it had been up to her, she never would have retired. Going to work every day and spending her time surrounded by her teachers and students is what had kept her going since my father passed.
Unfortunately, early this year she started suffering very intense pain in both legs, it got to the point where she was unable to get up or walk without assistance and in a few months, she had to use a wheelchair.
Her small pension did not allow for private medical care and going through the Mexican Social Security System meant that she had many mistaken diagnoses and she kept getting worse every day.
When her siblings took her to a private hospital the news were not very encouraging, she had two shattered vertebra and needed immediate surgery. Once the doctors went in they realized there was extensive nerve damage. Her sciatic nerve, which normally would have a similar diameter to her pinky finger, was flat as flat as a fettuccini. Repairing her vertebrae required bone implants, they were unable to use titanium to stabilize her back because she has osteoporosis, and her bones would not be able to hold the plates.
The surgery was successful, but she will still need extensive physiotherapy and will not be able to go back to work. Social Security did not cover the cost of her surgery and paying for it has completely wiped away her life savings and the small amount she got for her retirement. For clarity and transparency her retirement fund when she collected it was a grand total of $30,000 pesos, the equivalent to about $1,500 USD after a lifetime of teaching.
As family we have all donated some funds to help her but the stress of not knowing how she will support herself and not even having her retirement and savings is too much for her. That is why we are launching this campaign to raise funds so she can recuperate her small savings fund.

Ella y mi padre, Manuel, estuvieron casados durante 56 años hasta que él falleció hace casi 2 años. Juntos criaron 4 hijos y dieron refugio a mis primos cuando éramos adolescentes. Su casa siempre ha estado abierta a cualquiera que la pueda necesitar y muchos de nuestros amigos la consideran una tía honoraria.
Profesionalmente ha dedicado toda su carrera a la educación preescolar. Ella ha amado, cuidado y guiado a innumerables niños hasta su jubilación este año a los 78 años. Si hubiera sido por ella, nunca se habría retirado. Ir a trabajar todos los días y pasar su tiempo rodeada de sus profesoras y alumnos es lo que la había mantenido en marcha desde que falleció mi padre.
Desafortunadamente, a principios de este año comenzó a sufrir dolores muy intensos en ambas piernas, llegó al punto en que no podía levantarse ni caminar sin ayuda y en unos meses tuvo que usar silla de ruedas.
Su pequeña pensión no es suficiente para pagar recibir atención médica privada y al ir a consulta al Seguro Social Mexicano ha significado que le dieron muchos diagnósticos erróneos y empeoraba cada día.
Cuando mis hermanos la llevaron a un hospital privado las noticias no fueron muy alentadoras, tenía dos vértebras rotas y necesitaba cirugía inmediata. Una vez que los médicos hicieron la cirugía, se dieron cuenta de que había mucho daño en los nervios. Su nervio ciático, que normalmente tendría un diámetro similar al de su dedo meñique, estaba completamente plano como si fuera fettuccini. La reparación de sus vértebras requirió implantes óseos, no pudieron usar titanio para estabilizar su espalda porque tiene osteoporosis y sus huesos no podrían sostener las placas.
La cirugía fue exitosa, pero aún necesitará fisioterapia extensa y no podrá volver a trabajar. El Seguro Social no cubrió el costo de su cirugía y pagar los gastos médicos, de hospitalización y la fisioterapia ya agotó por completo los ahorros de toda su vida y la pequeña cantidad que obtuvo de su jubilación. Para mayor claridad y transparencia, su fondo de jubilación cuando lo recaudó era un total de $ 30,000 pesos, el equivalente a aproximadamente $ 1,500 USD, después de toda una vida de enseñanza.
Como familia, todos hemos donado fondos para ayudarla, pero el estrés de no saber cómo se va a mantener y ni siquiera tener su jubilación y ahorros es demasiado para ella. Por eso estamos lanzando esta campaña para recaudar fondos para que ella pueda recuperar su pequeño fondo de ahorro.
