I’m raising funds to support A SNAKE BITE KIT IN EVERY MOTHER'S BILUM (Bag).
This cause will support families in a very remote area of Papua New Guinea.
The BILUM is a symbol of life in Papua New Guinea - babies are carried in these woven bags from birth, food and life possessions are carried in them, and they go everywhere with the women or caregivers.
Mothers walk far distances to work in their gardens and are at high risk of snakebite for themselves or their small children.
Every $9 will support 1 family to always carry with them a snake bite kit and the knowledge they need to help save lives.
This cause will support 5,000 families in the isolated Strickland Bosavi area of Western Province, where snake bite is a very real threat, and deaths happen too often.
Families will receive a snakebite kit along with training that will help them to give basic first aid. A correctly applied compression bandage is proven to be effective in reducing the movement of venom through the lymphatic system. This gives more time to get the victim to a health facility or airstrip where they can get further help.

Indicator bandages are important so that the correct tension can easily be gauged and there is no risk of loss of limbs when a patient has restricted blood flow for extended periods from incorrect application. This sadly sometimes happens.
All bandage kits will need to be distributed by air transport or foot, with local health workers or support workers providing practical training at each distribution point. In addition, instruction sheets will be translated into languages the people understand.
