A Service Dog for Shannon McCreery

Don protégé
My name is Maria Renée McCreery. I have been married to the love of my life, Shannon McCreery, for 13 years. We have two children.  Isabella is 7 years old. She is a dual-immersion student, a ballerina, and piano player with artistic talent. Carlos, 4 years old, brings joy and laughter wherever he goes. He loves to play soccer, like his dad did.

My husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor in November 2016. He suffered left-side paralysis due to a massive stroke caused by the rupture of his carotid artery while undergoing brain surgery. Unfortunately, the tumor couldn’t be removed.

My husband struggles to perform everyday activities, relies on his mom or myself as his caregiver,  and suffers from side effects of the many medications he has to take, including headaches, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Despite all this, he is a Giant. He fights with faith and courage everyday because he loves us, and because God gives him the strength to fight for us.

In addition, Shannon has been suffering from grand mal seizures for a year. The seizures are caused by the brain tumor, which cannot be treated or removed because of the high risks.

At the end of January 2018, Shannon had a series of grand mal seizures. He was transferred back to Stanford Hospital where he was diagnosed with epilepsy. This condition can be scary and traumatizing for our family but we choose to trust God and be proactive about seeking treatment and finding ways to address it. We are very thankful that my husband is now under the care of the Epilepsy Clinic at Stanford Hospital.
I am a native of Argentina, and a devoted wife and mom. I will dedicate the rest of my life trying to help my husband have a better life. I learned that there are service dogs that can be trained to predict seizures. I consulted with the neurologists at Stanford and they thought a service dog could be extremely helpful for Shannon and our family.

In February, we visited Doggiedogood in Nipomo (www.doggiedogood.com) and we started an application to get a seizure alert service dog for Shannon. This will be an encouraging and exciting process. The dog will be trained to call 911, alert of a seizure coming, lay next to Shannon to help break a fall, and retrieve medication, if necessary.

Having a seizure alert service dog will bring our family comfort and peace of mind, and it could be life saving.

The puppy will be a chocolate lab because Daddy had a lab as a child. His name will be Packer because Shannon is a Green Bay Packers fan.

The training cost for this specific ability is US$10,000. The cost for the dog will be between $3,000 and $5,000.

Our goal is to raise US$15,000.

To start the training we need to make a 50% deposit. The remaining balance is due when the training is completed and the dog is ready to transition to our home. The process can take from 6 to 12 months.

Would you consider making a donation to help us bring Packer home to Daddy? And would you please share this campaign with your family and friends wherever they may be?

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love, support, generosity, and time.

God bless you, and your family.

Maria, Isabella, and Carlos McCreery
