Our friends Bill and Christine and their two boys Henry 13 & Jack 10 dreamed of an idyllic life farming their own land in rural Wales, that dream has now turned into a living nightmare.
Due to aggressive rheumatoid arthritis Bill is no longer able to work as a motor mechanic and the family has had to rely on the money that Chris earns as a casual milker at nearby farms. Bill takes care of the household chores while trying to earn a meagre living out of the farm and rebuild their tumbled down stone cottage.
The family lived for seven years in a couple of old caravans while they worked on the old cow shed to make it habitable for them. With four of them now living makeshift in the draughty, one room cow shed for the past few years, Bills health has deteriorated rapidly.
The work on their old stone cottage has come to a grinding holt due to Bill’s health and lack of funds. To make matters worse Bill suffered a heart attack in September last year, they all endured an eight-week flu illness over Christmas. Bill has recently been discharged from hospital suffering from double pneumonia. Christine is recovering from recently having a lump removed from her breast.
The family faces a grim reality every day with plans for the cottage renovation now modified for a wheelchair as soon Bill will not be able to walk.
These are hardworking, kind and generous people who happily share their farm spoils with friends who visit them.
They need funds desperately so that they can finish the cottage and move into the relative warmth and comfort it will offer them before the next harsh Welsh winter. We have serious concerns for their health and well being if they remain in the present living conditions.
