A Sacred Journey of Reconnection to Bahia, Brazil.

Dear Family, Friends, Allies and Supporters, I want to share with you my vision of bringing four incredible women – master artists, teachers, and sacred keepers of our African inheritances – on a sacred journey of reconnection to Bahia, Brazil. These four women are “Mama” Naomi Gedo Diouf, Artistic Director of Diamano Coura West African Dance Company (Liberia); Mabiba Baegne, teacher, drummer, and choreographer of traditional and contemporary African dance (Congo); Tammy Lynne Hall, renowned jazz pianist, composer and educator (United States); Catherine Ciiku Ndungu-Case, founder and CEO of Cheza Nami Foundation (Kenya). Four women from four different countries, all who have dedicated their lives to maintaining and sharing the African legacies of their ancestors through the arts. These women are my teachers and my inspiration, and it is my dream to go with them to Bahia, Brazil, the country which – outside the continent of Africa – has the largest population of people of African descent. I envision us exploring the rich connections we all have as daughters of Africa, living in the United States, sharing the gifts of Africa and her Diaspora with the world. The conception of this trip is to honor the contributions of Black women who are maintaining the cultural legacies of our people, here in the U.S., in Africa and in Brazil. I am so excited to introduce these amazing women to the communities I grew up in in Bahia, and to meet other women of African descent who are artists, activists, teachers and leaders. My goal is to start an ongoing conversation and cultural exchange, where we share our stories, honor our ancestors, teach and learn from each other and explore the profound relationships between our work and legacies. In Bahia, we will visit Ilê Aiyê, one of Brazil’s most important musical and cultural institutions, and a voice for Black Liberation for over 48 years. We will journey to two of the oldest and most important terreiros of Candomblé in Brazil, the terreiro Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá of Mãe Stella de Oxossí, and the Casa do Gantois. These two houses were founded by three African women in the 19th century; there we will have the opportunity to meet and talk with our elders, who have been maintaining the spiritual inheritance of Africans in Brazil. Together, we will sit at the feet of our elders, listen for the voices of our ancestors, and bathe in the legacy of survival and continuity in Brazil, which is so similar and connected to what each of these master artists have been doing in the U.S. It is my hope and prayer that this journey of reconnection will be healing and inspiring, a chance to replenish our energies to continue to do the work. The path of an artist is not an easy calling. It demands incredible strength, dedication, and perseverance to survive and thrive as Black women artists in a culture that does not see nor value artists, let alone Black artists, let alone Black women artists. Yet, each of these incredible artists has built a legacy of artistic brilliance and education that has impacted people all over the world. We will be our own anthropologists, our own historians, and researchers of our own cultures -- the tellers of our own stories to maintain the true legacies of our people. Donating to this GoFundMe will directly support this mission. It is a concrete offering towards equity and repair. So much has been taken from us, for so many generations. Here is an opportunity to support artists to take our own journeys of cultural immersion. 100% of the proceeds of this fundraiser will go to covering the costs of the trip (plane tickets, lodging, etc.) for these four master artists. Please consider contributing to this fundraiser and sharing with your network so that we can make this trip of a lifetime happen! Feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you prefer to make a donation in different way.
