Can you imagine paying 100% of your wages in rent and living the rest of the month on food stamps?
I can't either.
In January, I befriended a family of refugees. They fled war in DRC as children and spent TWENTY years in a refugee camp in Tanzania. They relocated the US in November 2016 and were met with all of the struggles and disillusionment of a failed American Dream. The first year in America is effing hard, and I can't even begin to explain it.
Not the least of it is getting locked into a way-too-expensive lease before even arriving in America. They didn't have a choice as this was set up by their resettlement agency. $1,300 a month on $10 hourly wages is completely unreasonable. They have been struggling to pay the bills ever since.
So, here's the deal. My family is facing eviction. Yes, they need access to affordable housing. Yes, they need access to financial counseling and money management. Yes, they need access to a whole suite of services and education that are severely lacking for the refugee community.
But my top priority today is keeping a roof over their heads and food in their bellies so that Mom and Dad can keep working, the kiddos can stay in school, and baby Julie can sleep in a warm crib.
Anything raised above goal will go towards repaying their travel costs. Did you know that refugees have to pay back their resettlement fees? Yep, that's SEVEN plane tickets from East Africa.
