A few weeks ago, we created this fundraiser filled with hope. 

Our sweet little boy, Siem, was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive brain tumor. After brain surgery, the plan was to continue with 27 weeks of intensive chemotherapy. We held on to the hope that the treatment would give him a chance to grow up. 

But life had different plans. 
 
After only eight weeks of chemotherapy, we received the devastating news that the tumor had continued to grow and had spread. The treatment was stopped because it was no longer effective. There are no curative options left. 

We have now entered every parent's worst nightmare: knowing that our time with our son is limited. 
 
Siem is only one year old. He should be discovering the world, learning to talk, taking his first steps, laughing without a care. Instead, our days are now measured by precious moments that we know we can never get back. 
 
Despite everything, Siem still smiles. He loves being cuddled, being outside, watching the world around him, and feeling safe in the arms of the people who love him. Those smiles, no matter how small, have become our greatest treasure. 
 
Because of this heartbreaking change, we have decided to change the purpose of this fundraiser. 

Instead of raising money for temporary housing during treatment, we want to use the donations to make as many beautiful memories with Siem as possible while he is still with us. Whether that means visiting places he can enjoy, spending quiet days together as a family, or simply giving him comfort and special experiences, every moment has become priceless. 
 
Any remaining funds will also help cover funeral expenses and other costs that may not be covered by insurance. When that day comes, we want to be able to focus on saying goodbye to our beautiful boy, without the added burden of financial worries. 
 
No parent ever imagines writing these words. 

If you choose to support us, you are helping us give Siem what every child deserves: love, comfort, happiness, and a lifetime of memories, even if that lifetime is far too short.

Een paar weken geleden hebben we deze inzamelingsactie opgezet, vol hoop.
 
Onze lieve kleine Siem kreeg de diagnose van een uiterst zeldzame en agressieve hersentumor. Na zijn hersenoperatie was het plan om door te gaan met 27 weken intensieve chemotherapie. We hielden ons vast aan de hoop dat deze behandeling hem de kans zou geven om op te groeien.
 
Maar het leven had andere plannen.
 
Na slechts acht weken chemotherapie kregen we het verwoestende nieuws dat de tumor was blijven groeien en zich had uitgezaaid. De behandeling werd stopgezet omdat deze niet langer effectief was. Er zijn geen behandelingen meer die gericht zijn op genezing.
 
We zijn nu beland in de grootste nachtmerrie van iedere ouder: weten dat de tijd die we nog met onze zoon hebben beperkt is.
 
Siem is pas één jaar oud. Hij zou de wereld moeten ontdekken, moeten leren praten, zijn eerste stapjes moeten zetten en zorgeloos moeten lachen. In plaats daarvan worden onze dagen nu bepaald door kostbare momenten waarvan we weten dat we ze nooit meer terug kunnen krijgen.
 
Ondanks alles lacht Siem nog steeds. Hij houdt van knuffelen, buiten zijn, de wereld om zich heen bekijken en zich veilig voelen in de armen van de mensen die van hem houden. Die glimlachjes, hoe klein ook, zijn ons grootste bezit geworden.
 
Door deze hartverscheurende verandering hebben we besloten het doel van deze inzamelingsactie aan te passen.
 
In plaats van geld in te zamelen voor tijdelijke huisvesting tijdens zijn behandeling, willen we de donaties gebruiken om zoveel mogelijk mooie herinneringen met Siem te maken zolang hij nog bij ons is. Of dat nu betekent dat we samen plekjes bezoeken waar hij van kan genieten, rustige dagen als gezin doorbrengen of hem gewoon zoveel mogelijk liefde, comfort en bijzondere momenten kunnen geven — ieder moment is onbetaalbaar geworden.
 
Eventuele overgebleven donaties zullen ook worden gebruikt voor de kosten van zijn uitvaart en andere uitgaven die mogelijk niet door de verzekering worden vergoed. Wanneer die dag komt, willen we ons volledig kunnen richten op het afscheid van onze prachtige jongen, zonder ons tegelijkertijd zorgen te hoeven maken over de financiële gevolgen.
 
Geen enkele ouder denkt ooit dat hij of zij deze woorden zal moeten schrijven.
 
Als je ervoor kiest ons te steunen, help je ons om Siem te geven wat ieder kind verdient: liefde, geborgenheid, geluk en een leven vol mooie herinneringen, ook al zal dat leven veel te kort zijn.
 
Mocht je niet in de gelegenheid zijn om te doneren, dan betekent het delen van ons verhaal net zoveel voor ons.
 
Uit de grond van ons hart willen we jullie bedanken voor jullie vriendelijkheid, medeleven en voor het feit dat jullie aan Siem denken.
