A Pacemaker for Moe

Donation protected

Our sweet old girl, Molasses, or "Moe" as she has always been called, has slowed down just a bit in the last two months. With a resting heart rate of just under 40 beats per minute (a dog her size should be between 60-100bpm), Dr. Martin Betts of Charlottesville Veterinary Clinic decided to do lab work, a chest x-ray, and an ECG. The radiograph showed a mildly enlarged heart, not entirely uncommon for a dog her age, the lab work was great, but the ECG confirmed his suspicions.

At twelve years and ten months of age, and in otherwise phenomenal health, Moe has been diagnosed with a complete, or third degree atrioventricular block. This means that the electrical impulses from the top chambers of her heart are not being conveyed properly to the lower chambers, resulting in bradycardia, and if left untreated, sudden death within three to five months post diagnosis.

The good news is that with relatively uninvasive surgery and the implantation of a pacemaker, the electrical impulses will be stabilized between chambers, and her prognosis is really quite good.

We must move quickly, however, and she is scheduled for surgery with Dr. Abbott of Cardiology at Virginia Tech on Monday, October 16, just a few days from now, which is not enough time for me to earn the amount required to help save her.

Moe is a beloved lifelong fixture of our farm, our family, and our extended family of thousands of Bed and Breakfast guests, summer kids, and lesson students. She is the daily greeter of every new face and loving acceptor of every new hug. It is not uncommon for our guests to happily oblige her requests to accompany them on their outings, or to sleep warmly at the foot of their bed, forgetting quickly they only met hours before. Like every great farm dog, Moe loves deeply, and is loved by many.

Please consider donating to help ensure that Moe is a part of this farm, and of so many lives beyond just my own, for years to come.

Sincerely,
