A New Life After Iraq

My name is Amna Al-Shawi. I am 18 and an Iraqi-American born to immigrant parents. I am a freshman in college, studying Spanish Education to become a teacher. A few weeks ago, my family and I traveled to Iraq during the winter break for, what I thought, was a vacation to visit extended family. Little did I know, my father had sold our family home and all of our belongings in the United States before we left, and had bought a house in Iraq. Upon arrival in Iraq, my passport was taken and destroyed. My parents’ plan was for us to never return to the United States.

I was trapped there as a way to try and “fix” me for being too westernized, and for trying to break free from their control. I was tortured and abused for simply wanting to live my life freely. With the help of the US Embassy in Baghdad, my friends, and my university I have made it back home safely to the USA. Thankfully, a friend who knew of my situation created an earlier GoFundMe on my behalf, and I was able to use the donations from this to repay the US State Department loan for my flight back to America.

I escaped my parents with only a gym bag full of clothes. Besides this, I have nothing. Any support I receive will be used to help pay for basic living expenses in the USA. I will be forever grateful to the many people who have reached out to me and offered everything from kind words to financial support. Thank you so much for hearing me and listening to my story. To anyone who has suffered or is suffering from a similar situation, hang in there, fight for your rights. Reach out to someone. I believe in you. Again thank you so much for your support. Lots of love, Amna.

Acércate a alguien. Creo en ti. Nuevamente muchas gracias por su apoyo. Mucho amor, Amna.
