A New Home for Wuendy and Zoé

In the first two weeks of November, Category 4 Hurricane Eta wrecked havoc across Central America, with Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala being absolutely devastated. Two weeks later, Category 5 Hurricane Iota made landfall only 15 miles from where Eta had hit easier that month, taking the same path of destruction.

I worked alongside my friend Wuendy at a bilingual school in northern Honduras for eight months last year, and in that time I came too see how hard-working of a teacher she is, and how kind of a person she is. Unfortunately, both Wuendy and her mother lost their homes from severe flooding.

Wuendy has a young daughter named Zoé, and she is doing all that she can to build a new home for them. Construction has started on the base of the house, but she still needs $2,700 to finish it. I told her I’m confident we can raise as much.

“Cómo sabemos este año a sido muy difícil para muchos, hemos enfrentado problemas económicos, de salud, violencia y ahora problemas climáticos. Por experiencia propia no ha sido nada fácil, vivir una angustia aproximadamente de 20 días con lluvias incesantes y vientos que daban mucho miedo, fue agotador.

Mi nombre Wuendy Yamileth Rivera Ramos y he sido una de las miles, de familias afectadas.

Mi madre fue afectada con el primer Huracán ETA, llevándole su casa y quedar completamente inhabitable y luego mi hogar fue afectado en segundo huracán IOTA, quedando mi casa en lugar de mucho riesgo, que si pasa algo similar no quedaría nada. Ya que quedo justo en bordón un río.

He decidido salir de ese lugar y hacer una casita, en un lugar más seguro, que cuándo escuche el sonido de la lluvia me provoque placer, tranquilidad y ganas de disfrutar con una tasa café. No pido mucho, solo lo necesario, un techo para mi niña, un lugar donde ella se sienta segura, un hogar. Sé que existe personas que pueden ayudar a qué esté sueño y necesidad sea posible.

De antemano les agradezco de todo corazón. Qué Dios les multiplique y bendiga siempre. Me despido con este hermoso poema, que me da mucho aliento y fuerzas para seguir adelante.”


As we all know this year has been difficult for us all, as we have encountered economic, public health, and public safety issues, and now we are encountering climate issues. My own experience has not been easy, living approximately 20 days of incessant rain and terrifying winds, something truly exhausting.

My name is Wuendy Yamileth Rivera Ramos and I’ve been one of the thousands of families affected.

My mother was affected by the first Hurricane Eta, taking away her house and making it completely inhabitable, and later my house was affected by the second Hurricane Iota, leaving my house in a state of high risk - soon my house will be gone like my mother’s if something isn’t done. My house is sitting on boards over a river.

I don’t ask for much, just only what I need, a roof for my daughter, a place where she can feel safe, a home. Perhaps there exist people that can help me achieve this dream.

Before anything I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. May God multiply and bless us forever. I end with this beautiful poem, one that gives me breath and strength to continue forward.
