New Haven Community Fridge Initiative
Fridge Haven is a collective working to address food apartheid in New Haven. How are we doing that? By starting a community fridge!
A community fridge is a 24/7, fully accessible, food solution. Anybody who needs food can come and take what they need. It will be filled with fresh produce, bread, and other groceries that are not always found in a food pantry. It is built by us - the community - for us.
Fridge Haven has almost everything we need to build this fridge. We have a place to build, at Varick Memorial AME Zion Church on Dixwell Ave. We have fridges. We have vendors committed to donating food. We have drivers signing up to deliver the food. We have a fridge shelter designed. We have volunteers to come build. Now all we need is building materials…and you!
Our goal of $3,000 will cover all of the building materials, electrician’s fees, electricity, and some other smaller costs (a whiteboard, water supplies for building, etc). We would like to begin construction by the end of August! We'll see you there!
