It's always terrifying to see something bad happen to someone you love. You can hear the sirens of the ambulance coming and you can see the flashing lights. Your heart racing as you imagine the kind of pain they must be in. At least all of ours were on August 30th when one of our softball players got hurt.
If you've been working at Gateway long or even just met her in passing, Alicia Mervau is someone you don't forget. She is a strong woman with a tender heart. She's always willing to put others first, even if it's at her own expense. She's smart, kind, and empathetic and an all around wonderful example of the kind of person we all should try to be.
She's the type of person that pats you on the back and tells you "good job" even if you just struck out at bat. She's the person that is there playing softball because it's fun to her. She's there to have a good time and share some laughs with the team.
We all saw her go to catch the ball that was hit right to short stop. We all heard the sickening thump of the ball hitting bone. And some of us saw the teeth come out of her mouth as she fell to the ground. And yet she still is the kind of person that never even shed a tear. She held it together for herself and her team.
Hopefully only some of us have been in the position of having crippling medical bills that we have to somehow try to find a way to pay. The kicker for Alicia is that she had two more days until her medical insurance started. Facing months of pain and multiple surgeries should be all this girl needs to face. She shouldn't have to also be worrying about the $10,000 it's costing to have all of this done.
