Let's Read Laptop Library for children in Ghana

                                                                                       Ama’s Story

“I have heard all about computers.  They sound amazing!  You can see pictures and words and they help you to learn.  Lots of people have them, but not out here in the countryside, and it’s too far for us to walk to the town.

My name is Ama.  I am 12 years old and live in a  small community in northern Ghana.  I go to the village school every day and I am learning to read and write.  I had never seen a computer, but my cousin in the city had told me about them.  I longed to learn on one. 

The one day, the white van drove into our school, and my dream came true!  My class was chosen to work with Mr. Laptop!
He comes about once a week and we are learning so much – how to use computers and to improve our English too.  The programmes are brilliant – just like games really.

We all shout ‘Mr Laptop!  Mr. Laptop!’  when we see the white van coming.  It’s so exciting!”

The Let's Read Laptop Library gives 300 pupils in rural primary schools in N. Ghana their first taste of I.T.
The children love having time on the computers; attendance has improved, as well as English and IT skills.

Help us to keep this project going!
Initial set-up costs of £14,000 were covered by a grant from a trust.  The annual cost of running the van and paying the salary of the project manager is £13,000.

We are now hoping to raise £10,000 to keep this ground-breaking project going for another year.
