Hi, my name is Madeline Fifarek!

I’m a nursing student at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to study abroad in Kenya this summer as part of a global health initiative! I’m incredibly grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to grow both professionally and personally!

When I told them I had been accepted into the program, I was thrilled—but also worried about how I’d afford the cost in time to secure my spot as a student. Without hesitation, they stepped in to help me financially, and I’m incredibly grateful. Now, I want to do my part and pay them back for their support. Every dollar truly makes a difference—even the smallest donation helps me give back to the people who made this possible.

Why This Trip Matters

This study abroad program in Kenya is more than just a school experience—it’s a chance to serve, learn, and grow. I’ll be engaging in hands-on clinical work and meaningful community outreach, gaining a deeper understanding of global health challenges, healthcare systems, and cultural practices. I’ll also be contributing to the well-being of underserved populations by helping provide essential medical care and health education.

Some of the impactful places I’ll be visiting include:

• Fikia Dada “Reach a Girl” Center – Supporting girls and young women affected by forced marriage, abuse, and early pregnancy.

• Cheshire Center for Disabilities – Promoting independence and improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

• Maa Trust Outreach Clinic – Providing child immunizations, maternal care, HIV testing, cancer screenings, and family planning.

• Limuru Children’s Center – Offering basic needs, education, and care for vulnerable children.

The Dream That Started in Childhood

My passion for nursing began at a very young age. I was lucky enough to grow up with two amazing parents—both whom were nurses. I remember countless times being in public when someone needed emergency help, and my parents were always the first to rush over. In those moments, I saw the best of humanity in them. I remember thinking, “If that’s what being a nurse is, I want to be one too.”. They’ve shown me that nursing isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life. Their endless support means the world to me and continues to guide me through my own nursing journey.

This Experience Will Shape the Nurse I Become

This is a rare opportunity in my nursing education—and one that will shape the nurse I become. I want to take everything I learn and carry it with me into future patient care, using these experiences to advocate for vulnerable populations and serve with cultural sensitivity and compassion.
