A Healthy Home For Unaccompanied Minors

Our Story
Update: K and G’s mom has been able to enter the US to seek asylum. Both she and the children remain separated due to a number of barriers including lack of housing and support. Our mission continues to create a safe place for this family. They still require medical care and, now they need to rebuild their lives and establish a home. If this families story speaks to your heart please give, every penny counts and no donations is too small. Our family is forever thankful for your help in supporting this beautiful family. Thank you.

In early November we were contacted by a church member looking for a family to take in two kids (10 & 14) that had been released from a youth immigration detention center in Texas. We are a former foster family who now have four adopted kiddos.   Even with our full house, we have maintained the philosophy that there is always enough love to go around. We decided to call a family meeting, asking our children if we can make room for two more kids in need.  The answer was a resounding yes. In spite of cozy conditions, language barriers, and much uncertainty about our new friends' immigration status, we said yes. At the end of the day, we knew one thing for certain:  these were simply kids who need a safe place to heal and be cared for.

Our family immediately began preparations.  Everyone started learning Spanish, our oldest gave up her bedroom so the two joining us could have their own space and we reached out to local networks for additional support.  Two days before Thanksgiving, we had two very scared new friends at our table.

Their Story
After fleeing brutal violence and the murder of their father in Honduras, K then (13) and G (9) and their brave mother were attempting to seek asylum in America. The Trump administration had just instituted the “Remain in Mexico” protocols where now over 600 people are residing in dangerous and unsanitary tent camps. This was an unacceptable and terrifying situation for our young friends’ mother who had to make the hardest decision of her life. She sent her two young children across the border as unaccompanied minors. This unimaginable act of love began a harrowing journey for K&G that has culminated with them being a part of our family here in the midwest.

The children are now registered with ICE and live with the daily fear of deportation. Their mother is still residing in the tent camp on the  Mexico border but she is now able to speak with her children daily. As undocumented immigrants, K&G are not eligible for Medicaid or any medical or dental coverage. They have experienced incredible trauma in their short lives and need ongoing care for their mental and physical health.

Our Commitment
Ultimately our goal is to see K&G reunited with their mother and settled safely. Until then, we are committed to giving their lives some foundation of support and normalcy. K&G have become a welcome addition to our family, but due to several factors, we are unsure when or if the children will be reunited with their mom.  With the support of K&G’s mother, we have begun to seek guardianship for K&G. But we cannot do this alone.

As our family (of now 8 members) navigates the immigration process with K&G, we are asking for your help.  K&G will need access to health care, dental care, educational support, and extensive counseling.  We are inviting everyone we know and anyone who is moved by K&G’s story to join us in creating a safe and healthy environment for these kids.
