Gilbert's family is in crisis

Gilbert Malfabon is one of Evan's close friends from Serra High School. Gilbert is one of the hardest working kids that I know. All through elementary school and middle school, Gilbert was disciplined enough to maintain stellar grades which then led him to receive a scholarship to Serra High School. Gilbert is one of 3 kids in the family. He has two sisters, one that just graduated from college and one in the 7th grade. His parents are from Michoacan, Mexico, and work so hard to provide for their kids.
The Malfabon family facing financial difficulties and emotional struggles. Gilbert’s father is a gardener. He works 14 hour days. Due to the long hours and repeated physical stress from his job, he has been told that he will need surgery. Gilbert’s mom holds two jobs. She works at Mc Donalds and works for a cleaning service. She starts her days at 6 am and isn’t able to come home until 9 pm each night including weekends. Recently, she was told that her hours are likely to be reduced and she may lose her second job. Gilbert’s dad’s surgery is next week, and he could be disabled for up to six months.
If I haven’t mentioned this already, let me share that the family of 5 live in a two bedroom and one bath apartment that is less than 1000 square feet. And we all know what rent is like in the bay area.
As if trying to maintain the three jobs between the two adults wasn’t stressful enough, working a total of 180 hours between the two (the average American works 40-60 hours per week) the added stress of trying to make ends meet, now both parents could be out of work. Imagine growing up always worried about whether or not the family can make ends meet. Gilbert and his sister Fabby managed a childhood where they were resilient and--though under stress--were able to persevere. However their little sister Yuli is facing social challenges at school, and has become depressed over the years. Gilbert and his family are extremely worried about Yuli as any family member would be.
I love Gilbert to pieces. You ask any of Gilbert’s friends’ parents and they would tell you that he is an incredible person. Hard working and humble. Always looking for work so that he can contribute to the family. Imagine this kind of stress on a young child. If you met Gilbert and his family, you would instantly feel the love and care. Gilbert’s family is in crisis and it is so hard for me to see this happen. For those of us who are so lucky and so fortunate to make ends meet and have what we need in life, please take a moment and consider helping this beautiful family in crisis!
