A GREEN ESCAPE IN THE NORTH OF ANGLESEY

A little History of the Island

Isle of Anglesey is and island in North Wales, situated in the UK. It’s an Island with a rich history with the first evidence of human settlement from the Mesolithic period, around 7000BC. Throughout the ages, evidence of the rich history can be found in stone burial chambers, standing stones and hill forts around the Island, supported by archaeologist finds such as pottery and stone tools.

A family with Dreams

In 2014 we bought a farm on Isle of Anglesey, with the vision of making it into both a home but also a recreational area as well as an area for tourism. The farm is 25acres and placed in AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and yes, it is truly a magical place. We are also placed in the dark belt, which means that on a clear night, you can even see the milky way, as well as fantastic costal scenery, cliffs and history.

The farm and area itself has a long and rich history, and is said to date back to 1364. The newer extensions was added in 1730. In 1930 it was auctioned away to the council and thus endured years of neglect. We are the fourth family owning the farm and we wish to bring it back to how it used to be. We also hope to educate visitors about the history of the farm, the land and the area by hanging up beautifully designed plaques containing information.

Surrounding Area

There is so much to discover and see, from history to wildlife, churches to scenery, however what there isn’t a lot of is recreational park areas for families to enjoy. This is due to the fact that most of the land is agricultural, and the Island also has a lot of cliffs, not always suitable for families with young children. The land that we have, we wish to create into a park. On the land we also have a grade II listed cottage that is renovated for holiday stays (privately funded) as well as a beautiful lake, bustling with wildlife that we want to extend the footpath around, adding bridges in some of the areas around the lake. We also wish to integrate a safe bridle track for horses and ponies, making it a safe haven for young children in learning.

Other things we wish to include are foot paths, also suitable for wheelchair users and a playpark for children to safely enjoy. The park forms part of the already well known public foot path, however we wish to build onto it and we will also introduce opening and closing times. In time we wish to be able to host events that can build upon the rich history of the island, such as re-enactment groups from the Anglo Saxon times with its druids, Viking ages, Romans and the middle ages, where you can walk from one era to another.

This is a park with focus on wildlife and supporting the environment by planting native trees to invite more wildlife to enjoy and learn from, as well as integrating shifting cultivation. By this we mean allowing livestock, in our case small sheep, roam freely on our land, naturally rotating the vegetation and fertilising it, regenerating the land and its vegetation. We will also put up smaller plaques along the footpath explaining what wildlife you might see on your walk, and what to look for. Some of the wildlife we have is:

-          Barn owls

-          Little Owl

-          Great Spotted Woodpeckers

-          Mallard Ducks

-          Grey Common Heron

-          Common Buzzard

-          Fox

-          Hare

-          Rabbits

-          Stout

In order to make this haven for both people and wildlife as well as animals, we are asking for a donation in order to make this a reality. The land has unfortunately been neglected and abused by the former tenant over a long period and needs to be transformed back to its former glory. We have struggled getting funds as for the farming unions, we are not farming the land and are therefore not eligible for grants, and as for the councils/Welsh government, we are not enough of a tourist attraction yet to be considered for funding.

However, hopefully with your help, anything is possible.

We also wish to give something back!

We wish to give something back for the donations made:

£10-£200 - a box of chocolates (UK only)

£200-£600 - we’ll plant a native tree on our land with the name of the donator/business on a plaque.

£600+ - 10% lifetime discount on renting the holiday cottage
