Story:

When I was deciding on a career, it was difficult for me because I had so many passions: medicine/research, piano/composition, classical music, and gardening. I always thought that pursuing medicine would require me to give up on those passions to focus on studies, but I was thankfully dead wrong. I have volunteered my piano playing for various organizations in the DC area and one that I am most passionate about is the Isaiah House sound empowerment program.

Isaiah House is a drop-in day socialization program (affiliated with So Others Might Eat) for homeless adults with mental illness that focuses on peer support, peer-led activities and outreach to engage mentally ill homeless adults in the community. It provides individual case management, therapeutic groups, life-skills classes and a wide variety of enrichment activities.

Every Wednesday that I am available, I play them some Rachmaninoff and Chopin and we spend time composing music together, but just today (!) I was chatting with Janelle (the social worker who coordinates the sound empowerment program) and mentioned some of my other passions such as gardening and Shamika (another employee) got so excited and asked if I can provide my services for the empty plot of land pictured above, to WHICH I ALMOST EXPLODED FROM EXCITEMENT IN YES!
To appreciate music is one thing, but to nurture a living organism and watch it bloom with your care is on another level of therapeutic value and I cannot wait to teach the members of Isaiah house how to prune and care for roses (which are still my babies back home). From where they cut, they will see new branches growing, and blooming in thanks, and that spark of making a positive impact and creating beauty in this world is something that this demographic would benefit from most. I cannot wait to do this with them.

All proceeds will go to buying the following:
Mulch (2 bags, $3.75 each)
Potting soil (4 bags, $8.47 each)
Fertilizer (Miracle-Gro Shake 'n Feed 4.5 lbs, $11.98)
Sheers (2 pairs, ~$10 each)
Anti-Disease spray (Ortho 3-in-1, $8.97)
Gardening gloves (to avoid injury while pruning roses, 1 pair, ~$11 each)
4 Rose shrubs (roses are perfect because they come back every year, are very fun to take care of, and bloom all the way through November, ~$25 each)
8-9 lilies (A pack of 3 gorgeous Asiatic lilies at Home Depot, ~$8 each, 3 packs)

Total = ~$217.50 (+6% DC tax)=~$231 (+ 2.9% +$0.30/transaction gofundme fee) = ~$242

All of the money raised that is not used for gardening will be donated to Isaiah House/SOME.

Thank you!
