Why Akshara?
Akshara falls under EMpower's livelihood portfolio. Akshara enables young women to acquire technical, employability and leadership skills to become competitive in the formal workforce. This is critical because unemployment among youth due to lack of skills and poverty is a long-term challenge for India. Particularly so for the urban poor in Mumbai (Maharashtra State). The young women living in slums are deprived of post-secondary school education due to the lack of availability of vocational/skills education and socio-economic barriers which restrict their educational opportunities.

What can you do?
- USD 103 enables 1 young woman to receive individualized mentor support for career planning and job placement
- USD 212 supports 2 young women to undergo training on computer skills, financial literacy, goal setting and job preparedness workshops.
- USD 504 supports 12 young women to gain foundation life skills to be successful in negotiating their careers, mobility and family life. They will participate in the Girl Path exercise to improve their articulation of career aspirations, ability to identify and address gender-based violence (GBV) and discrimination in occupational and domestic setting.
