Help a family facing immigration retaliation!

Kamal* and Prerna* are a South Asian couple in their sixties who moved to the US three years ago on a work visa for Kamal’s new job. What was supposed to be an exciting opportunity turned out to be a traumatizing nightmare. The company Kamal was employed by refused to pay him the amount agreed upon in their contract. Kamal and Prerna sued the company for breach of contract and were awarded damages by a judge after a multi-year lawsuit. Instead of paying the money owed, the company stalled until Kamal’s work visa expired and then called ICE to the parking lot of his home where they detained him.

Kamal has been in detention for four months and is at immediate risk of being deported. Prerna, having lost their household’s primary income earner, was evicted from her home. Kamal and Prerna have lost their entire life-savings in the lawsuit to fight this predatory company. All Kamal and Prerna want is to recoup some of their losses by being paid the money they are owed so that they can return to their home country. The company wants them deported before they have to pay.

Unfortunately, employers using the broken and unjust immigration system to retaliate against their employees is not uncommon. Exploitation of South Asian workers through the U.S. work visa system is particularly common and often leaves workers with absolutely no recourse to fight back.
