THE FAMILY STORY:
The two youngest daughters of the Martinez family, have each earned a full scholarship through the Loretto Academy Challenge Program.  Ms. Martinez, a single mother of four, purchased a home with the intent of fixing it up over time. Unfortunately, home repairs fell by the wayside as Ms. Martinez became the primary caretaker for two nephews and a niece who lost their mother to colon cancer.  Sometime thereafter, Ms. Martinez’ father came to live with the Martinez family where he too succumbed to colon cancer.  All the while, Ms. Martinez has served as the sole provider, as a team leader at a local fast food restaurant, to tirelessly work and care for her family.  Ms. Martinez has colon cancer.

In late Fall of 2020, Ms. Martinez confessed to the Challenge Program that her own battle with colon cancer was not going well and that her health was worsening.  She acknowledged that her failing health and the deterioration of the family home, specifically the roof, were most likely contributing to daughter’s stress.  Upon visiting the home, the Challenge Program staff found it in a state of dilapidation and in desperate need of many major and minor repairs.

The response from the community has been overwhelming. A local builder, Mimbela Contractors Inc., donated their work and material to reroof the home and repair the interior ceiling.  The Window Depot has donated 10 storm windows, a local contractor has agreed to install them at a discount.  Odessa Enterprises Inc. replaced the AC unit, and repaired the heater.  Rebuilding Together El Paso, Villagi Homes, El Paso Association of Builders, QMartins Plumbing Services, Inc, Ferguson Enterprises Inc., John Ferguson Moving & Storage, Interceramic Tile, Del Rio Engineering, and Boy Scout Troop 727 have all made a commitment to this home improvement project, Ms. Martinez and her family.

Yet, there is still more work to do and you can make the difference. Please make a donation today, and join the Martinez home rebuild project to give a hardworking mother of four peace and comfort about her children’s future as she continues to fight her disease.
