<div>My name is Nathan Taupez Scinto, and I've spent my career traveling the world telling stories through film. Over the years, I've documented incredible people, remarkable places, and unforgettable moments but nothing prepared me for what I discovered on a tiny Caribbean island called Utila, Honduras.

<div>I didn't travel there looking for this story.
</div>

<div>In December 2025, I arrived in Utila while filming another documentary. What I expected was a routine production. What I found was one of the most beautiful places I had ever visited and one of the most heartbreaking environmental challenges I've ever witnessed.

<div>Utila is home to some of the most spectacular marine life in the Caribbean and sits within the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. Every year, divers, marine biologists, and travelers from around the globe visit these waters to experience their incredible biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and unforgettable wildlife.

<div>But hidden deep within Utila's mangrove ecosystem lies a reality that very few visitors ever see.
</div>

<div>Decades of accumulated landfill waste refrigerators, washing machines, plastics, metal, and countless tons of debris have become trapped among the mangrove roots, threatening one of the island's most important natural ecosystems. Because mangroves help protect coastal waters and support the health of nearby coral reefs, preserving them is essential to the long-term health of this extraordinary marine environment.

<div>I couldn't simply film it and walk away.

<div>That's why I created "A Dot in the Ocean" a documentary that not only tells Utila's story but also launches The Utila Project, an initiative dedicated to helping restore this extraordinary island.

<div>This GoFundMe campaign is about turning awareness into action.
</div>

</div>
<div>Every contribution will help support Phase One of the cleanup effort, including clearing waterways for access, removing accumulated waste, transporting debris, separating recyclable materials, responsibly disposing of non-recyclable waste, and beginning the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem. If our full fundraising goal isn't reached, every dollar raised will still be used to begin the cleanup with the resources available.

<div>Our hope is to return to Utila in September 2026 to document these efforts as the final chapter of A Dot in the Ocean, showing what can happen when people from around the world come together to protect a place many have never even heard of.

<div>PROPOSED SCOPE OF WORK
</div>

</div>
<div>1. Site Access &amp; Waterway Clearance
</div>
<ul>
<li>Conduct an initial environmental assessment of the project area.
</li>
<li>Clear debris, fallen vegetation, and obstructions from the narrow mangrove waterways to establish safe navigation routes.
</li>
<li>Create sufficient access for barges and work boats to reach the landfill site. Identify staging areas for loading and transporting debris.
</li>

<div>2. Waste Removal Operations
</div>
<ul>
<li>Mobilize cleanup crews, volunteers, boats, barges, and equipment.
</li>
<li>Remove accumulated landfill waste from within the mangrove ecosystem.
</li>
<li>Conduct multiple transport trips between the cleanup site and designated processing locations until the project phase is complete.
</li>
<li>Continue removal operations based on available funding and project resources.
</li>

<div>3. Waste Sorting &amp; Material Separation
</div>

<li>All recovered materials will be sorted to maximize recycling opportunities whenever practical.

<div>4. Recycling &amp; Material Recovery
</div>
<div>Whenever feasible and economically practical:
</div>

<li>Separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable waste.
</li>
<li>Prepare recyclable materials for processing. Repurpose recyclable plastics into recycled construction materials, including concrete additives or composite products, where appropriate and available.
</li>
<li>Utilize recycled materials to assist with roadway repairs and other community infrastructure improvements when practical.
</li>

<div>5. Disposal of Non-Recyclable Waste
</div>
<ul>
<li>Transport non-recyclable waste to approved waste management facilities on the Honduran mainland.
</li>
<li>Dispose of materials in accordance with applicable environmental regulations and best practices.

<li>Minimize the amount of waste requiring landfill disposal through recycling and material recovery whenever possible.
</li>

</div>
<div>Following debris removal, the project may include:

<li>Stabilizing disturbed areas.

<li>Filling and grading portions of the former dumping site using environmentally appropriate fill materials.

</li>
<li>Preparing the site for long-term environmental recovery.
</li>
<li>Supporting future mangrove restoration efforts where feasible.
</li>

</div>
<div>Throughout the project, Think Global Media Group will document the cleanup process for Part Two of A Dot in the Ocean – The Utila Project, capturing:

<div>Think Global Media Group is conducting this fundraising campaign in support of The Utila Project with the goal of raising funds to help clean and restore the mangrove ecosystem in Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras.
