Backstory
Hello my name is Genesis Jones and I was born with Sickle Cell Disease SS. Sickle Cell is a debilitating blood disease that causes the blood to be shaped like a crescent instead of round. This difference in the shape of the blood can cause the crescent shaped cells to become hardened and sticky. Causing cells to carry inadequate oxygen, creating blockages in the blood vessels and severe pain called a vaso-occlusive crisis. All this can lead to damage to vital organs and other severe complications. The only cure for Sickle Cell is a stem cell transplant.
I have been on the National Marrow Donor Program registry for more than 10 years searching for an unrelated donor. There are 20 million people on the registry, but only 4% are black. This makes it even harder for me to find my perfect match, as sickle cell is a minority disease. For as long as I can remember there has always been a constant battle with medical life threatening events and excruciating pain. Pain is something that I plan my life around and I am waiting for that day to change.
The Cause
With the help of a haploidentical stem cell transplant trial through the NIH (National Institute of Health) that day is closer than I would have ever thought. I now cry tears of joy because I know the pain is going to come to an end. I am excited to have met the qualifications to move forward and participate in this clinical trial. This is going to completely change my way of living, but I will need your help with My Journey.
My Grandmother Dianne, my caregiver and never-ending support throughout my life will need to accompany me. There will be a time period where she would be away from work resulting in no income. This fund would be used to help support us financially during the trial. The trial is not local as it takes place in Maryland. Meaning we will have to maintain our monthly household expenses at and away from home. Also, supporting needs necessary for my grandma, as she provides care and assistance to me during the trial.
The trial is a total of 9-12 months for full recovery. These months will be spent going through treatments (the partial bone marrow transplant) and restoring my health. Once I return home and officially CURED from sickle cell, there will be a critical time period where I have to maintain a healthy environment, until my immune system is fully restored. I would like nothing more than to have my grandma, my biggest supporter by my side through this whole journey and YOU can make that possible!ri
When
The screening for the trial will start as soon as January 2020. Shortly after this I will be able to receive my new healthy donor cells (provided by my mom).
The Cost
Currently there are expenses that my grandmother will have to continue to maintain without income during this trial.
100% of expenses will be used for medical care before and after transplant. Time frame of transplant process and recovery is anywhere from a year to two years.
