A “Chi” for Help!

Dear Chi Alumni,

My name is Kevin Boes, I am the current Grand Master of the Chi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Purdue University. I am representing the chapter to reach out for your support as fellow Brothers and valued alumni.

The Chi Chapter has seen a clear decline over the past several years, illustrated by poor choices made by some of the Brothers, poor academics, and lack of follow through in keeping our Alumni informed and involved with the Chi Chapter.  Unfortunately, this last May, Kappa Sigma Headquarters imposed a fine of $25,000 against the Chi Chapter as a form of disciplinary action for past events.  Our efforts to reduce the fine through an appeal sent to Headquarters fell on deaf ears.

The current Chi leadership acknowledges that changes need to be made with how the Chapter is managed and how the Brothers behave.  Nevertheless, the amount of this fine is an exorbitant amount and has rarely been imposed on any Kappa Sigma Chapters to this extent.

The good news is that the process towards making the changes needed to return Chi to the level of excellence that we all expect has already started taking place.  Many problems have been left unaddressed or not fully analyzed to the root cause over the years - until now.  The Chapter has undergone a strict membership review conducted by our Alumni Board of Control, made up of 20 committed alumni. These 20 alumni have given us and will continue to give us great insight that will prime us for success moving forward.

The bad news is that with just 44 committed brothers, around half of our original membership, the Chapter is having a hard time paying the fine in the short time frame provided by Headquarters.  Combined with the reduced number of students on campus and anticipated challenges in recruiting new members as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, the Chi Chapter is in a precarious financial position.

We are looking to do whatever it takes to rebuild and set a strong foundation through smart goal setting, a strong rush, accountability, and commitment to the brotherhood. We hope to put the past behind us and focus on what matters: strengthening the brotherhood as students at Purdue. However, the fine presents a barrier that has slowed our much needed progress.

We are reaching out to Chi alumni in hopes that you will help us with raising the funds to pay the fine and assist us with moving forward and maintaining the level of excellence that we all know Chi Chapter stands for.  We would greatly appreciate a non tax-deductible donation, even if it’s only a couple dollars! Also, please share this request for help with other alumni with whom you have contact.  I know that money can be tight, especially in these times, but it will not go to waste; instead, it will be an investment for supporting the development of the strongest brotherhood on campus for years to come. Let this money be a testament to the strong alumni support and legacy this Chapter has! Note: any additional funds raised over the $25,000 will be shared equally with the Educational Foundation and House Corporation to support housing, educational programming, and scholarship needs.

The Chapter is eager to get back on campus and start the year off with a strong rush as we look to becoming a Kappa Sigma Founders' Award of Chapter Excellence (F.A.C.E.) Chapter! Please contact me if you have any questions.
