A Chair for Keith

Meet my Brother Keith. Our family is staring this crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to supplement the cost of a new wheelchair for him. About thirty plus years ago, Keith suffered a massive injury to his brain stem that left him a quadriplegic. It was an aneurysm and he spent a week in a coma. Upon waking, he was faced with the frightening realization that he could not move. Being aware of his surroundings, and yet unable to move or speak would break the strongest of people. But he adapted to the situation, and to this day, he is still the most accepting and patient person I have ever known, with an unparalleled sense of humor. But since that day, he has lived in a wheelchair, communicating with medical assistive equipment.

With the exception of when he is put to bed at night, his wheelchair is his world. Adjustments to the proper tilt, raising and lowering the foot rest, are essential to his comfort and good health, keeping pressure off of bony areas for too long, and body support are critical. The chair he is currently in has served him very well for almost 15 years but is breaking down and now he is due for an upgrade. A new chair for my Brother is needed! Keith has medicare, but due to many changes in their diagnosis code books, the new chair cannot be completely covered with that insurance only. In the years since he was put into his current chair his body and his abilities to move have changed. The new chair will give him more support and greater mobility. Including the ability to drive it himself, using his mouth. In the videos I will post here, you will meet Keith and see how well he drove his new test chair when we went to the seating clinic in Asheville, NC.

As I have tried to demonstrate, the current chair is no longer meeting his special needs.

The new chair is more costly, than the family can afford and Medicare will pay for the basic chair but not the modifications. And he does need those for comfort, for support and for more independence. Our current goal is $6500.00. That is what we need to make up the difference.
