"A Brave Battle for Life"

Monica is battling a rare Nontuberculosis Mycobacteria called Mycobacterium Chelonae-Abscessus due to an underlying condition of her lungs called Bronchiectasis.  Mycobacterium Chelonae-Abscessus is an environmental organism found in soil and water.  It is notoriously difficult to treat because it is multidrug - resistant.  To date, it is still considered an incurable disease.

This is not Monica's first battle with a NTM bacteria.  In 2006, Monica was diagnosed with MAC, Mycobacteria Avium Complex, and received extensive treatment and a lung resection surgery.  In 2008, the MAC went into remission and she has been very healthy until this new diagnosis.

Monica is under the care and direction of National Jewish Health & Research in Denver, Colorado, the leading respiratory hospital in the nation, as well as receiving specialized care from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Her care involves a medical care team of "experts" in the treatment of these types of mycobacteria.

Long term treatment of chemotherapeutic antibiotics, inhaled medications and an experimental medication have been prescribed.  Surgery or the possibility of a lung transplant are considerations if the medication protocol fails to work.

Monica is on a medical leave of absence from her full-time Administrative job at Iron County Medical Care Facility.  To assist Monica and her husband with medical and travel expenses, as well as the costs of Home Health Care in the home, a Go Fund Me Account has been established.
