A Better Home for BMad; A Family in Need
Seeking Emergency Safe Housing Fund for Bonfire Madigan
Hi, this is Madigan
I'm writing now, encouraged by several movement activist compañerxs, to ask my wider community for help. I'm fortunate to have made my primary living as a working artist my whole life, and have performed hundreds of benefits for the collective liberation values and communities I believe in, but always while living on the margins of society. With two small children and rough economic times, making a living, maintaining a functional work space and keeping everyone fed is harder than ever.
But what has pushed things over the edge is my current need to find a new place to live as soon as possible. A predatory landlord who sexually harassed me and attempted to assault both me and a single woman neighbor, has made my home of the past 5 years unlivable. For my own safety and my family's I need to move, and i cannot do this on my own. I'm asking for your support in helping with these overwhelming emergency relocation expenses, as well as the unexpected first month's, last & security deposit, a truck and professional piano mover in addition to securing extra childcare support to get us out of this toxic environment. Money raised beyond this will enable me to upgrade my work space/healing space (i'm still somehow limping along on a 2009 MacBook Pro), re-root a loving environment for these kids, rehearse new works, take on bookings & finish my sixth studio album!
I'm a cellist, vocalist, composer, performing artist, harm reduction activist and single mama of Sil age 6 and Nat age 8, living in Kumeyaay Territory at the border of California & Mexico. I've been making music, theater, activism and touring creative performance projects since I was 8 years old. I've collaborated onstage and in studio with artists including Phranc, Kimya Dawson, Joan Jeanrenaud, Carey Perloff, Cat Power, Olympia Dukakis & Elliott Smith. I was an early leader of the budding Riot Grrrl movement as well as a founding collective member of The Icarus Project,
a grassroots support & media education network led by & for people living with experiences commonly labeled "mental illness"; all the while continuing as musical director & bandleader for the chamber punk, art song ensemble & solo cello act, Bonfire Madigan
I may have been the one to suggest "Friends Make the Best Medicine" as the title of The Icarus Project's mutual aid support manual, yet it's still very hard to ask for help for myself, and I wouldn't if I didn't need it. This is my life's calling & work. As soon as I have a stable home, I will pass your support forward especially here in the borderlands where I raise these children sin fronteras as many fight for basic survival; because of them, we continue being & supporting interdependence & self-determination. No donation is too small. Everything helps. Even just passing this plea on to your community, especially with a simple mssg of why it may matter to you is valuable. We are in this all together, and together we rise.
Thank you for being my Bonfire;
