Zoie Prepares for China
Since kindergarten, now a 10-year old 5th grader, our daughter Zoie has attended Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, a full immersion Chinese language program in Washington DC - a program unlike any other in the city! This is her 6th year of learning to read, write and speak Mandarin Chinese. Before moving on to Middle School, there is a 5th grade trip to China that marks the capstone of their elementary school learning experience. This second annual 2-week trip will occur in April of this year. Reports from last year's trip were nothing but successful and positive results. Parents told us that their children returned with considerably more confidence in their Chinese language skills. The experience was life-changing for them!
Yu Ying is a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious institution that understands how important it is to raise critical-thinking, global citizens. The school has received several awards and accolades since first opening its doors 6 years ago - Department of Education Green Ribbon School, 2013 Best Elementary School in DC (according DC City Paper), and officially named a "Tier 1" high-performing school by the DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB).
This is an amazing opportunity for Zoie to experience such a life-changing trip. She is beyond excited and as a part of this cultural experience, they will attend school in China with one of their sister schools. Additionally, each student will stay with a Chinese host family for 4 days which means they will truly have to depend on their Chinese skills to communicate! They'll visit Beijing, Chungdu and Zunyi, which is where they'll have the home-stay and attend school.
Being so young, the majority of the students going on the trip will be accompanied by a parent. This means the cost of the trip is at least doubled for us. To help curb the cost of travel expenses we will incur, any donation to make this trip a phenomenal learning experience for Zoie would be profusely appreciated!
