Zoe's Technical Textile Tuition

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Zoë Powell and I'm a Textile Designer & Maker.

I come from a family of artists. My father is English and my mother was Anglo-Uruguayan.

By chance, I was recently introduced to course which I have just begun to attend in Barcelona. It is the Fabricademy. http://www.textile-academy.org/

Some of you who know me know I am passionate about creating resourcefully, reducing waste and improving the effect of textiles production on the environment. I feel a responsibility to join with others to combat the unseen and negative impacts of the fashion and textile industries on our environment and communities.

The course focuses on an up and coming areas of Textile Design like wearable technology, bio plastics and developing ethical and sustainable ways of making. This includes those new technologies like 3D Printing as well as laser cutting and mini circuits or sensors, but also heritage skills like dyeing with plants and developing fabrics from natural resources. I will even get to dye with bacteria!

The course is for 6 months, 3 of hands on learning with lectures (see the program here) , The last 3 months are project focussed.

I am excited that I will have full access to machinery, technology and some materials that would be otherwise unavailable to me. The tutors, lecturers and technicians are first class! We are 4 students here but there are 36 others from all over the world as the course is being run simultaneously in over 17 locations, a diversity of great benefit to all of us (see the list of nodes here.)

I love this course but the fees are a big stretch for me. I have just about managed to pay for the first installment of 1,800€. I have taken on a part time job teaching english to children at the same time as I study, but I know it will not be enough.

I need your help to pay for the next two installments.

1,350€ due November 22nd 2017 and the final will be 1,350€ due on 22nd December 2017. (In GBP thats around £1600, £1200 & £1200)

So I need to raise a total of €3000 to complete the course: I will do my part to make your investment worthwhile by giving it the intense effort I would a full masters degree.

Afterwards, as I said, I want to research the breakdown of textiles and reduce textile waste for the environment. You can look at companies companies like Terracycle https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/about-terracycle who are pioneers in the field.

I hope to work for such a company which develops technologies for reducing textile waste. I want to teach what I have learnt, work with those who want to develop something similar into their curriculum.

The opportunity is once in a life time for me, and I would be so grateful to anyone who wants to help me achieve this goal.

I will share all my work and projects and findings on my website and social media, so anyone can follow my journey. I would also be happy to do workshops and help anyone else get involved in any of the subjects I learn about.

For your help, also please look for the rewards I will put on Etsy or my Facebook page : scarves, accessories, jackets and bags. I would be very happy to do something bespoke for anyone willing to help me.
