A Young Dolphin named "Zip".

A young male bottlenose dolphin, estimated to be less than 1 year of age stranded near South Padre Island on Sept. 22, 2015. The dolphin was pushed back into the water several times by beachgoers and a response team as there were other dolphins in the immediate area but he continued to return to the beach.
He was transported to the Coastal Studies Lab there in South Padre Island for short term stabilization and immediately began swimming on his own. There was a very strong red tide presence in the area but we do not know that it was the cause of stranding. The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) started diagnostic and bloodwork tests.
The Critical Care Team from TMMSN Galveston made the trip down the next day and transported the little guy from South Padre to Galveston. It was a lengthy transport but he handled it well.
Because this dolphin is so young, it is going to require a great degree of intensive care and it is going to take a village to do it. The TMMSN has a great group of volunteers, but we could greatly use your help with the funds that it will take to care for this dolphin. This boy has been given the name “Zip” because he is extremely quick and it is taking at least 5 volunteers to help complete each feeding. He is receiving formula via tube and we will be working to get him on the bottle if possible. Zip needs feeding at least every four hours around the clock so you can do the math as to how many volunteers we have helping each day, 24/7.
The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network does not receive any guaranteed federal or State funding to operate. The TMMSN relies upon small grants, public support and volunteers to continue its mission statement efforts of Rescue, Rehabilitation, Research and Education.
Expenses are high for rehabilitation such as this and we appreciate that you are considering donating to this cause. Your donation will immediately be put towards medications, life support systems maintenance and direct facility costs that are critical in Zip’s recovery effort. The TMMSN consists of six regions along the Texas coast, which provide a coordinated response to all marine mammal strandings along the Texas coastline.
