Keep Young 1ove Low-Tech

Tax deductible
Help us to continue low-tech health and education programming that results in proven learning gains for hard-to-reach youth.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1.5 billion students were out of school worldwide. In Botswana alone, 900,000 learners have been affected by school closures. Young 1ove, which provides in-school health and education programming, realized that the pandemic required new education models, and rapidly pivoted its programming to a “low tech” intervention. Using SMS/text messages and phone calls, Young 1ove delivered this programming to more than 5,000 households.

To test the program’s effectiveness, we ran a randomized controlled trial in partnership with the University of Oxford, Columbia University, and J-PAL, which produced some of the world’s first experimental data on strategies to minimize the pandemic’s impact on learning outcomes. For our low-tech education programming, our trials showed a 31% reduction in the number of students who could not perform a basic numerical operation. Families who received our intervention spent more time on learning than families in the control group, and 99% of participants want to continue the program after school resumes. The intervention and the results from have been published in the New York Times  and in the Centre for the Studies of African Economies publication .

Our low-tech health programming used phone calls and SMS/text messages to build a support network and safe space where youth could engage with a facilitator/mentor about how to stay safe and healthy during school closures. Students receiving phone calls were 15% more likely to seek emotional support from family and friends. One-on-one calls created the opportunity to engage deeper than usual with students, to the point that a student revealed she had experienced sexual abuse by her stepfather. Young 1ove supported the girl and her family to receive the services they needed.

A generous donor has agreed to match every dollar raised, up to $10,000. This mean we would be able to provide other TWO MONTHS of programming of this critical service in Botswana.

Any amount of support makes a difference for student learning.

Your $25 donation provides two months of distance learning to 5 children.
Your 50$ donation allows us to reach 10 children with two months of distance learning.
Your $100 donation provides two months of distance learning to 20 children.
