Help Us Take 2 Students to Music Camp!

I am the 7th grade Social Studies teacher at YES Prep Northbrook in Houston, TX. This summer I plan, with your help, to take five of my students to Running Springs, California, to attend an eleven day music camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. YES Prep is a Title I charter school system serving students from low income families in Houston. 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of them have never left Texas or been on an airplane. A trip like this will significantly expand their worldview and expose them to countless new ideas and opportunities, through interactions with other campers as well as the musical instruction they will receive.

Arrowbear Music Camp in Running Springs, California, was founded on the idea that the experience of preparing and performing music teaches young people the value of leadership, mutual respect, cooperation, and personal growth. Exposure to diverse repertoire and world-class instruction throughout the collaborative process are combined with an emphasis on openness and community. A session at Arrowbear instills in campers ideals that will be valuable throughout their lives as students, musicians, and colleagues. At YES Prep we have a similar mission to educate the entire child and increase their opportunities through enrichment activities and mutual encouragement. Every YES Prep Northbrook Rocket is expected to give 100% every day and support his or her peers in developing the skills we all need to succeed and give back to our community.

During the school year, YES Prep students are exposed to many experiences that extend their education beyond their textbooks, but these take place on a smaller scale than a session at Arrowbear. This trip will take place over eleven days of overnight camp, providing even more intensive education and growth for my students.

I believe very strongly that the collaborative process of music making can allow students to practice positive behaviors that will translate into how they live their lives, whether or not they intend to pursue careers in music. I would like to take five students to Intermediate I session at Arrowbear this summer so that they may spend time living and collaborating with their peers. On this trip they will learn new things about themselves, both as musicians and as people, and bring valuable lessons in leadership back to our school community.
