Wiggins Family House Fire Recovery

A sudden fire swept through the home of DeAnna Wiggins and her three teenage children on October 12, 2018.  DeAnna barely had time to retrieve her purse before the flames incinerated the roof and upstairs floors of the home.  In an instant, the family's worst fears were realized:  their home and nearly every possession vanished into the flames.  Thankfully, the family was unharmed.

To DeAnna, a single mother, Army veteran, and Special Ed Para Educator, her home was a testimony to self-sufficiency,  freedom, and creativity.  An 80's era cabin set on three acres of once-neglected gardens and orchards, their home was a fantastical realm.  Until the fire, it sheltered many cozy nooks for writing, reading, and creating art.  It was a cozy but imperfect home.  Where others saw only an aging cabin, DeAnna saw boundless potential.  She held fast to the old cabin as the realization of a long held dream:  a sturdy American homestead set on fruitful land.

DeAnna made many sacrifices to acquire and renovate the cabin.  She was working on improving the old cabin so that it would be up to code and would qualify for insurance.  That's right, it was uninsured at the time of the fire. Getting the cabin up to code was a slow process because of her limited educator's income,  even though she devoted weekends to working on it. She bought the house as is, it was a bank repossession. The former owner had done many home "improvements", including encasing the stove pipe for the wood stove into a fake rock facade. The Fire Marshal said that the stove pipe failed up by the ceiling which was car decking. The fire burned out of site behind the fake rocks, until it spread out to the rest of the ceiling and roof, jumping from ceiling bay to ceiling bay until the whole ceiling and roof were gone. The firefighters were able to arrive in 3 minutes but they couldn't stop the fire, they could only contain it to the roof/ceiling.

If you don't know DeAnna, then you know someone like her.  She's a loving and self-less person who puts her family and community first . She's a special education para educator,  a single mom,  and caregiver for her father, a vibrant man suddenly incapacitated by dementia in July.

Now,  DeAnna needs your help.  Winter and the cold rains are coming.  The family has temporary shelter but they're in need of just about everything else.  In lieu of well-intentioned material donations,  please give to this campaign as money for essentials such as food, clothing, furniture, bedding/towels, and comfort items are desperately needed.  The children, in particular, suffered the greatest losses, as their rooms were completely destroyed.  At this point, your monetary support will have the most impact on DeAnna's family.
