Whale Shark Conservation Volunteer

Donation protected

What’s scarier than an ocean with sharks? An ocean without them.

I’m a sophomore at Texas Tech University, raising funds for Maldives Whale Shark Research Program . I have been selected to volunteer with MWSRP for a month in the summer 2018 (June 24th to July 21st)!

MWSRP is a non-profit charity dedicated to studying whale sharks and fostering community-based conservation initiatives in the Maldives and greater Indian Ocean.

These islands are also home to a year-round population of whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea. The gentle giants, measuring up to 40 feet, are an integral part of our marine ecosystem and the local Maldivian communities.

Many large marine species play critical roles in ecosystems by maintaining habitats, enhancing nutrient cycles and balancing the food web. We need to protect marine life from destructive human tendencies. The number of whale sharks has been rapidly decreasing, and we need to take action!

If you would like to support the conservation of whale sharks, and the research that helps to protect them, please consider making a donation toward the volunteer program. Fundraised money will be paid directly to MWSRP to cover rental of the research dhoni (boat), accommodations, food, fuel, research equipment & community outreach.

Any amount of support would mean the world to me. I will be making a short film documenting my experience with MWSRP this summer. I am extremely excited about this opportunity, and look forward to sharing my experiences with you.
