Wells Maine Steeple Project

Donation protected

Several years ago, due to structural reasons, we had to take down our historic steeple.  Our church building was built in the early 1800's and the steeple dates to 1831, the year that a George Holbrook bell was installed in the belfry.  Holbrook was an apprentice to Paul Revere and his bells have significant historic value and hundreds of Holbrook bells are located all over the country.

The Congregational Church of Wells began with the arrival of Rev. John Wheelwright, of Boston, and a group of his followers at Wells in 1642, and is one of the oldest continuously running congregations in the country.  Over its storied history the church as been involved in many mission and outreach programs, and today has an active membership of about 150 (https://wellscongregational.org/about/history/).

When completed, our steeple will one again hold our historic George Holbrook bell cast in 1831.  The new steeple has been designed and a foundation and supporting tower built.  The supporting 42' tower (pictured) a steel core and is covered in New England style white clapboards.  The bell has been cleaned and refurbished and is now ready to be placed on top of the the tower, and then a new 40' belfry and spire will be installed.  It's going to look great!!

To fund the building of a new steeple, with a belfry for the Holbrook bell, and to make other needed structural improvements, we started a $500,000 capital campaign back in 2014.  Since the campaign began we have raised over $400,000, but we are still short of our goal.  Our members and friends have given generously, but we are running out of local sources of money to finish the job and we are hoping that this GoFundMe effort, along with squeezing a bit more from our members and friends, and from area businesses will do the job.
