Family Trip to See Dying Dad

Dear friends,

Let's start this letter with the obvious:  cancer sucks.  On Christmas Day 2013, Josh and I got a call from my dad, John, with the news that he had been diagnosed with cancer.  A relatively rare form of cancer, small cell carcinoma (SCLC), it is nonetheless fairly lethal, with just a small percentage of those diagnosed living longer than 5 years from the date of initial diagnosis.  Unlike many cancers, SCLC doesn't form surgically extractable tumors.  Instead, the cancer cells invade otherwise normally existing tissues.  In our case, dad's veins near his heart were affected.

Of course, this was devastating news to all involved and many tears were shed.

Dad was brave and chose to fight it with everything he had; he endured debilitating chemo and radiation for months, including a course of radiation to his brain as a preventative measure since the non-tumorous cancer cells can easily travel into the brain.  At the conclusion of the chemo and radiation treatments in May, Dad's full-body scan showed no signs of cancerous cells and we all breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

Just within the past few days, however, Dad went in for a routine scan.  The results showed that the cancer was back and had spread to his lung.  With this more aggressive development, the doctors have given him no more than a year to live.

We're all reeling from this news.  To add insult to injury, our family lives thousands of miles from him; we are living in Provo, UT and he lives in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  We have had two children in the past two years, which - despite being a huge blessing - has left us with little savings to use to spend time with Dad before he goes.

Will you consider helping us fund our cross-country trip so Lauren can have one last visit with Dad... and a first visit for our boys to meet their Grandpa?  We would be forever grateful.

With deepest gratitude,
