Join us as we pull off Mongus first skate contest!

Hi all,

We are WeSkate Mongu! A locally run skateboarding community in Mongu, western Zambia. Our founder, Johnny K. Kalenga was the first skateboarder in town and for the last four years he has been teaching the rest of us how to skate. We currently run scheduled sessions a couple of days a week, using the basket court of one of the Mongu schools. One weekly session is girls only. Please check out our Instagram  or Facebook page  for the full story!

So we have been planning our first ever community skateboarding event. It will be a back to school event on January 14th 2020. The event will feature amateur skateboarding contests for all levels of skaters, a dancing competition for the kids interested and a mini soccer tournament.

Prices will be items such as notebooks, school bags, pens and pencils, colouring books, tooth brushes, tooth paste, drinking bottles, lunch boxes and socks. We will also add some food stuff, such as cooking oil or a pack of sugar that the kids can bring home to their family. This is a good incentive for the parents to let their kids take part in the event.

If we manage to raise enough funds we will also feed the kids during the event, either snacks and cold drinks or a proper nshima and chicken meal for the participants.

All in all, we are collecting funds for prices, rental and transportation of a sound system, marketing of the event (posters and flyers) as well as a contest-day meal for all the kids that take part. We are expecting about a hundred participants. If you would like to see the budget for the event, don´t hesitate to contact us through our social media accounts!

Anyone wishing to put a smile on these kid's faces can donate towards it and make this festive season a memorable one for us all!

You may wonder why the prices are not skateboard related. The simple reason is, we don´t have any skateboard gear to spare. At the moment our skateboarding community of about 100 kids share a total of 10 skateboards. We have supporters in different parts of the world that are willing and ready to donate skateboarding gear to us but the issue every time is shipping. So, if we exceed our goal for funding the contest, the rest will be saved for future shipping costs.
