Mural Restoration Project San Diego

Donation protected
A call to Artists and Donors - We need your help. The historic Civil Rights Mural has been vandalized again.. this time it's the 32nd Street side of the wall.

We've received permission to restore it. Legendary Artist Mario Torero will be partnering with Southeast Art Team to restore the mural. Now, all we need is supplies and volunteers.

We're planning to begin restoration as soon as we have the supplies including paint, brushes, buckets, tarps, and everything related to the project.

For all of the murals we restore, we want to protect them with a solar-powered floodlight and a smart camera that would allow us to customize the siren.

From July 2020 when we first restored the mural until now, Southeast Art Team has been busy. We went from working outdoors to working indoors at our new space Oya Art Gallery & Boutique and at the arts and culture studio, we helped open on Market Street, Kali Artist Konnect.

The floor at our gallery was installed by hand, we painted the walls and we've been working to maintain the monthly overhead to keep our beautiful space growing for our families and arts and culture in our community.

Flashback to summer 2021, when we installed the piano staircase near the Billie Holiday mural before the gallery doors opened within the historic Clementine McDuff Elks Lodge #598. We didn't know what the future held but we knew we needed a space.

Super special thanks to the entire Elks Lodge family, Exalted Ruler Mr. Larry McGuire, the Trustees Mr. Simmie Collins, Mr. Davis, the Daughters of the Temples and family for giving us the oppurtunity.

The organization and building have been in the community since 1925.

The journey continues! Fast forward to summer of 2022, Artist Kim will be working with The Blue Heart Foundation to continue the beautification on the storefront murals on Imperial Ave. Special thanks to Roxanne Girard for community collaboration.

Thank you Former Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Officials for holding your press conference at our mural located on Imperial Ave. Thank you CRO Jen for your support!❤

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed and thank you to everyone in advance who will help us transform the face of several buildings throughout our community.

Looking back at 2020 when within a week's time the wall on Imperial at 32nd Street was completely restored with the help of this fundraiser and many volunteers.

Thank you Mario!!

Transforming the mural was an incredible experience.

Once the word got out about us restoring and creating new murals, local business owners started calling!!!❤❤

Please help us spread the word that we are continuing the efforts with more spectacular mural restorations and installations on the way.

How we got started:

One of San Diego's historic murals located at 32nd and Imperial Ave had been defaced. The faces of important figures in our history had been completely covered or tagged and needed restoration.
This mural has been an important landmark in our community since 1993. The Hall of Fame masterpiece was originally installed to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders and was restored in 2002 by muralist Mario Torero with community help.

Mario and Southeast Art Team members are all still super excited about this restoration project.

They say if you want to learn about a community take a look at it's walls. This wall tells stories of the heroes that have lead us through our darkest hours.

Mario left a very powerful imprint when creating this beautiful installation years ago.

The donations we received were used for the following:

Pressure Washer
Landscaping around the mural
Stucco on the wall
Artist Supplies

This time around we would also like to contribute to our artists. We know we will not be able to pay an hourly rate but we would like to make a donation to each artist for their time, energy and effort.

Public art has such a huge and valuable impact on community members of all ages.

The feedback is always positive when it comes to new installations and the positive messages displayed through images and words.

Southeast Art Team represents San Diego's 4th District and surrounding communities.

We would like to thank:
Geena the Latina, Frankie and the 93.3 Family
Batta Fulkerson
Love City Heights
GoFundMe
and everyone for their special attention to this matter.

Due to the positive response from the community and volunteers, we raised our goal and are continuing with more murals!!
