Waylon Carter - Medical Expenses

In February 2009, Waylon Carter, who was only 5 1/2 years old, began to have symptoms of a stomach virus; fever, vomiting & diarrhea. His mother, Shelly, took him to a local emergency department near their hometown. While running numerous tests, they discovered a serious medical problem; bowel obstruction. He was immediately transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia where he underwent emergency surgery. His team of surgeons had to remove all of his small intestines. Shelly and Waylon spent 6 weeks in Morgantown, and then were transferred to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) for transplant evaluation. He was evaluated and placed high on the list as he was in critical need of a transplant.
After 2 false alarms, Shelly received the call they had been praying for. Waylon received his transplant on this 7th birthday, August 14th 2010. It was a 6 month stay at CHP for recovery. After doing fairly well the first couple of years post-transplant, Waylon had a serious case of rejection in 2012. He never fully recovered from it.
Since 2009 Waylon’s family have amassed enormous financial expenses traveling to and from Pittsburgh for follow up care and inpatient care as needed.
Fast forward to present time; Waylon and his mom have spent 18 out of the last 24 months in the hospital at CHP battling chronic rejection. Waylon also has a little brother, Jeffrey, who stays with his grandparents while Waylon is in an inpatient. This is very hard for Jeffery as he is away from his mom and brother for extended periods of time. It is also hard on Waylon and Shelly as they are a very close nit family & miss Jeffrey terribly.
During this time, another tragedy hit their family. Waylon's father passed away suddenly in May 2014, leaving him without medical insurance, without life insurance--nothing. When he was put on Survivors benefits from the Social Security Administration, his medical card and food stamps were cut off.
After a long battle of trying to heal his body of rejection, his team of doctors decided that no more could be done. The medication to try to reverse his organ rejection could possibly cause cancer if they continue further. To their disappointment, Waylon is facing another surgery on Monday, January 26, 2015, to remove the small bowel that was transplanted in 2010. His family and friends are hoping and praying that this will grant him a better quality of life. He will be ineligible to be relisted for transplant for at least 6 months; and even then, it will be a 3-5 year wait thereafter.
Shelly and her family have endured extreme financial hardship since Waylon was diagnosed with short gut syndrome. Shelly had to quit work in order to take care of Waylon full time. Her parents have gladly taken on the role as “parents” to Jeffrey, while she is at the hospital with Waylon.
