The bottom line? I started this site to raise money to pay for medical bills and other costs associated with the birth of my nephew Wyatt Walter Seidl, born October 13, 2014. His amazing story will follow, but the need for funds exists because of the very high out-of-pocket health care costs of my brother's insurance ($8,000), my brother not receiving any paid paternity leave to be with his new son, two daughters and wife, my sister-in-law having to take a leave of absence from her job to care for her children, and for the cost of gas and living 2 hours away from their home in Little Falls so that Wyatt can receive the best care possible from the doctors at the U of MN Children's Hospital. They really need the support of anyone willing to help!
And now for the amazing story of Wyatt...
My brother Chris and his wife Paula (also my best friend) found out during Paula's pregnancy that their baby boy Wyatt has a congenital heart defect called Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum. This technical diagnosis means his heart has an extremely small and non-functioning right ventricle and no pulmonary valve. This is a very signficiant congential heart defect with no known cause.
During the pregnancy, the pediatric cardiologists at U of MN Children's Hospital thought Wyatt's only hope of survival after birth would be a heart transplant due to the severity of his heart defects. Paula made it to 40 weeks + 1 day (something her body was unable to do with her daughters Tessa (11) and Kylee (9)), so miracle #1 had already occurred....
Wyatt was born via emergency c-section at the U of MN hospital on October 13, 2014. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. (also a record for their kids) and was a beautiful sight for everyone in our family to see. He survived his birth and his first night in the NICU (miracle #2) and since that time has been in the NICU and recently underwent a catheter dye/contrast procedure to explore the specifics of his heart defects now that he is outside of the womb. He remains on an IV of prostaglandin and caffeine, which enables his heart to get blood where it needs to while helping him to maintain his breathing and will be unable to go off these drugs until "next steps" are determined.
Miracle #3 (and this is a big one) is that after the dye/contrast procedure, the docs have pretty much thrown the heart transplant off the list of options and Wyatt will be able to have a series of 3 or more surgeries to repair his heart as much as possible. The first surgery involves putting a shunt in one of his arteries which is planned during the week of 10/20/14. Though this surgery is the least complicated of the required surgeries, it is the most risky because of his small size and compromised heart.
After that surgery, Wyatt will hopefully leave the NICU to go to the cardio intensive care unit where his big sisters can actually see him (no one under 12 can go to NICU). We are unsure if/when he can leave the hospital and go to his true home. Until that time, his family is in transit between Little Falls and Minneapolis and life is unpredictable for everyone.
Our whole family has been touched by so many people who have shared their positive thoughts, prayers, success stories, and love throughout this process. I believe all this positive energy has been a great source of why these miracles have occurred. I've never been comfortable with asking others for money, to buy things, etc., but I'm asking now. If you have any amount to share, Chris and Paula will receive it and it will go towards Wyatt and Paula's medical bills, gas to get to and from home, and to help pay the mortgage and car payments while they are away from work or working less.
