Fundraiser for the Kichwa Community in Ecuador

Donation protected
We are raising funds to help support the Kichwa community, an indigenous group that lives mostly in the Amazon rainforest's Ecuadorian region.

The preservation of Kichwa culture is essential because they are a tribe that has a deep understanding of plant medicines in the rainforest and knowledge about the connection between humans and nature. Their long history of harvesting and using the guayusa leaf ceremoniously is why guayusa is now benefiting many people worldwide.

Sadly, the Kichwa community is facing incredibly difficult times.

The Kichwa community has long faced economic challenges, and the financial implications of COVID19 have exasperated these challenges. In spring of 2020, after attempting to self-quarantine and protect themselves from the coronavirus, a massive oil spill polluted the rivers where some families live, destroying one of their primary food and clean water sources. Although the growing popularity of guayusa in international markets has helped to bring them more financial stability, they still face many challenges. With such hardships in their communities, many young community members leave for the cities, searching for jobs. Tragically, they often end up living in poverty, dying of malnutrition or suicide. As a result, the Kichwa wisdom of plant medicine, spirituality and mother nature is being lost.

We can help our Kichwa brothers and sisters save their communities and their culture by supporting their financial stability.

By helping the Kichwa community gain financial independence through guayusa and other crop exports, they can better stand up to the corporations destroying the natural environments. If the Kichwa communities have economic stability, then the young community members will stay in the rainforest and preserve the Kichwa culture.

We are raising funds to donate to the Green Matters Foundation.

The funds donated will go toward initiatives such as helping the Kichwa farming families to improve their farms and living quarters. Green Matters Foundation may also use the funds to give the community members better access to medicine and food, which has been difficult for them to get during the COVID19 pandemic.

The Green Matters Foundation works directly with the farming families that grow and harvest the guayusa leaf. Waisamama Guayusa Tea Co. and our customers have a spiritual connection with these families as they handpick the leaves that end up here in Canada.

Please help us by contributing to our fundraiser to support the Green Matters Foundation and these Kichwa farming families.

Thank you.
