WorldTeach Ecuador Summer Program

¡Bienvenida donantes!
I am raising money to volunteer for the WorldTeach program in Ecuador this summer. I want to teach English and technology (and hopefully some science!) in a way that helps my students value their own culture and lifestyle while also giving them the tools to have more opportunities in their personal and professional lives.

Here is the program profile:
WorldTeach Ecuador Summer Program

This fundraising page is to raise money for the program fee. I am saving money to pay one-quarter of the program fee (it is $3,990 in total), my flights, and any additional expenses, like teaching materials, myself. Any money I raise over my goal will go to Partners in Health (http://www.pih.org/) which helps the medically underserved around the world.

What the program fee covers:
- Orientation Training: 1 week training upon arrival, including teacher training, teaching practicum, language and cultural immersion, safety & security briefing
- WorldTeach pre-departure literature and preparation
- End of Service Conference
- Meals and housing during orientation and conferences
- Transportation between training and placement sites
- Housing and meals during my placement
- Health & emergency evacuation insurance
- Support from full time, in-country field staff
- Professional development through Teacher Quality Program, including mentorship by remote Teacher Quality Coordinator

About me:
My first international volunteer experience was during my senior year of college when I went to a small village in India called Abeypur. I joined our student chapter of Engineers Without Borders in an ongoing effort to bring a small village a sustainable source of clean water and I blogged while I was there (http://uofhchapterofewb.blogspot.com/).

Then, in my first year of graduate school, I traveled to Granada, Nicaragua with a group of student activists. We spent our trip renovating the wing of a school in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Granada and painting a mural with a group of local students who were at risk for some of the worst ills of poverty, including human and sex trafficking. It was one of the most physically and emotionally demanding service projects I have ever worked on. My time in India and Nicaragua made me aware of the struggles and benefits of volunteering in developing countries. Because of these experiences, I want to dedicate time throughout my life to volunteer in impoverished countries like Ecuador.

I recently graduated with my Masters of Arts in Teaching for biology from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. For my student-teaching placement, I chose to be assigned in a low-socioeconomic district, which also had a high percentage of recent immigrants from Latin American countries. Even though I taught several English Language Learners complex topics like evolution and genetics, I can easily say that my students taught me more than I taught them. My non-academic conversations with my students ranged from discussing Spanish slang and popular Latin music to talking about how much they miss their home country and their harrowing journeys to get to America.  My student-teaching placement and my time in Nicaragua introduced me to the warm and welcoming nature of the Latino community as well as the unique challenges they face. My experiences as an educator have led me to witness the transformative nature of education. A caring teacher and a supportive school can change the lives of students and improve an entire community. Please support this cause by donating to my next volunteer education adventure!

¡Mil gracias a todos que me ayuda!
