World Marathon Challenge 2019

I come from a family of 7 children where 3 of us kids have Type 1 Diabetes.  My older sister, Kelly, was the first to be diagnosed when she was 7 years old.  She was considered a "brittle" diabetic as it was caught extremely late.  In the mid 1960's, there wasn't a lot of information about diabetes.

Being a Type 1 diabetic and having a lot of energy to burn, I had to learn, very quickly, how to balance what I eat with how much I "played".  Too much play would mean my sugars would drop dangerously low.  Not enough food would also send my sugars in a downward spiral.  Some thought that I should sit and read books or maybe draw versus playing softball, running track, playing baseball, bowling, etc.  I wasn't having any of it.

I took up the love for running.  In late 2003, my sister Kelly passed away from cancer.  I strongly believe that her weaken body from years struggling with Diabetes just wasn't strong enough to fight this horrible disease.  So when I finally qualified to run Boston in 2004, I dedicated my run to her.  And every race since,  I say a prayer for her and tell her I'm running this for her since she can't.

I now have an opportunity to run the World Marathon Challenge in January 2019!  http://worldmarathonchallenge.com/

This is an extreme event where we will run 7 marathons (26.2 miles)  in 7 days on 7 continents.  A challenge of this intensity includes temperatures and weather extremes from freezing temperatures in Antarctica to extreme highs in Dubai UAE; as well as a grueling time schedule that will test our training, strength and stamina.  This, alone, is a struggle for someone who doesn't have a disease.  I will be worrying about my insulin pump and will the extreme cold temperatures in Antarctica damage it.  I'll need to adjust the amount of insulin I give during this entire week as I'll not be resting much.  Then you add in the time changes with the altitude changes and the added adrenalin that will be pumping through my veins --all of this will have a huge impact on trying to keep my sugars level.

This type of adventure captures the attention of local, regional and international media not merely on the sporting pages but also in the general and life sections in magazines, TV, social media and the internet.

I'm raising $44k to cover the entrance fee to this race.  I will need to hit my goal by 12/31/2018!!  As you can imagine, it takes a lot of support and expense to ensure that we can travel to each continent and finish all races within 168 hours.  The clock starts when the starting gun goes off in Antarctica and stops when I cross the finish line in Miami.

As I do for every race, I will be dedicating this adventure to my sister, Kelly!  And with this dedication, I am also raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)  where they can use the money for more research in finding a cure,  to help educate the newly diagnosed and their families, etc.  Anything I raise over my goal will be donated to JDRF.  I will also be working with JDRF where I will volunteer my time, after the race, to speak to these kids about the importance of staying active and eating right so they can live a healthy long life.  I will also share the memories of my sister as I had the opportunity to attend a camp with her when we were in elementary school (my job was to ensure her sugars did not drop and if they did, I could give her the food she needed to recover).

Will you help me raise money to run this race and give back to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)?  Everyone benefits from helping JDRF find a cure as per recent statistics, approximately 542,000 children have Type 1 diabetes.  We all have someone in our extended families or group of friends who has been afflicted with this disease.

I will be starting a Facebook page showing my progress to the start of the race all the way through to the finish!!    Come join me!!
