Vivian’s Story
Last week the unthinkable happened to our family. Vivian Ramos, Alfred Ramos and Lauren Bingham’s beautiful little 3 year old daughter, was diagnosed with “Medullobastoma,” a rare cancerous brain tumor.
Lauren noticed something odd about her walk. She was having difficulty keeping her balance. She kept asking to be carried and would reach for a hand when walking down the street. Her parents took her to the hospital immediately. Doctors
recommended a physical therapist and sent them home. Still undiagnosed the symptoms got worse. Later that day Vivian fell on her way to the front door of the house. She looked bad, she started vomiting, and lost color in her face. They rushed back to the ER and demanded a scan right then and there!
Nothing could have prepared her family and friends for the news. The doctors discovered a mass in the rear of her brain. The worst news a parent can hear, their hearts were crushed. Something was clearly very wrong, and the news was devastating. The symptoms she was experiencing were a result of swelling in her brain from the tumor. The tumor is located in the area of her brain that controls her equilibrium and motor skills. While nothing about this feels good, it is fortunate that the tumor was found will be removed immediately.
What’s Next?
Vivian has been admitted to the pediatric ICU and is scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning @ 6:30 a.m., where a group of the best neurosurgeons in Northern California will have to make an incision into Vivian’s little skull in order to remove the tumor. The doctors are optimistic that the surgery will go well, but still, it’s absolutely terrifying. Although surgery seems like hardest part, it’s really only the beginning. The doctor’s say it’s like the first leg of a marathon. A year of chemotherapy, radiation, and physical therapy will follow. Recovery from brain surgery will not be easy for a little girl so active and full of life. Her motor skills will temporarily be affected and chemotherapy will replace swim lessons and play dates. No child deserves to go through this, but Vivian is super strong, and everyone that knows her is sure that she is going to kick cancer’s butt.
Why we are asking for $20,000
The situation is urgent! The out of pocket expenses are, and will be, overwhelming. Lauren and Alfred are looking at some large medical bills for surgery and treatment. Because she’s just a little toddler, one parent will stop working or significantly reduce their workload to stay home with her for the rest of the year.
Other ways to help
The family needs all the best wishes and positive energy for a speedy recovery. Some friends have sent food and delivered groceries. That has been incredibly helpful. House sitting during one of the hospital stays or stopping by to take Vivian’s best friend Lola for a walk would be great too. Occasionally transportation to the hospital may be needed as they are a one car household. Our hope is that our family, friends, and friends of friends can helps us reach this goal.
