Hello Special Reader,
My name is Valerie. I am a single-mom of 2 smart young boys. I work as a paraprofessional (teacher assistant) for children with special needs in New York City. I recently found out in March 2016 that I was diagnosis with Stage 2A breast cancer.
As any parent, my first thoughts were my children.
"Mommy, are you going to die?", can not be painful enough to withhold my tears at night at this point. Living in one of the most expensive cities (Brooklyn), how will I manage to keep a roof over our heads? I had a few sick days from work, now I have none. I was able to physically get on public transporation, now I have to call a cab. The mountain of medical bills and copays is overwhelming.
I am trying to work through treatment, but I had a reaction leaving me to have difficulty breathing from a shot 24 hours later. Thank God for my 6 year old, who helped call 911 and ran to bring the paramedics inside my home during this reaction.
The funds will be used towards medical bills, rent and other expenses (like transportation). With the amount of days I have missed at work due to several appointments. I am now being docked pay leaving me unable to keep a stable home for my two boys.
I am grateful that I am still here. I will forever be thankful for your help. I appreciate the love that I have received from family, friends and many of you. I hope that this will be an inspiration to someone on my journey. Thank you again. Please Share.
