Susan _ _ _ _ _ _ is one of those people you meet at church sometimes who are so excited about Jesus and filled with so much love and helpfulness it overflows like a spring of clear mountain water, refreshing the soul of everyone who comes near her.
I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of Susan’s refreshing spirit when my revised novel was nearing publication. I was invited to tell the church about it; when I did she immediately made a donation and ordered a copy.
Months later, after Susan and her husband Peter - horse lovers from Bilpin - had returned from interstate delivering hay to badly drought affected farmers, the novel was published and Susan’s copy was delivered, but Peter “ran off with it” she said.
Days later, I received this message:
“You got me hooked on the first line. Well done. Up to chapter 4.”
I asked her if I could quote her . . . “Yes” she quickly replied, then added “I did a writing course and they said you need to have the reader hooked by the first 3 lines; so you have got me by the first 3 lines. I am still intrigued. The pace is good. You have melded enough explanation into the story without becoming boring or losing flow . . . you have done well.”
I said “Thanks for your feedback. Few readers realise what goes into novel writing. I’m thinking of sending a copy to our new PM.”
“God for it!” she said.
