Send us back to 1906!

My name is Jonathan Pong and I am a 5th grade teacher at Ulloa Elementary School. Our 5th grade team of teachers (Aaron (& Kristy), Colin, Mike, and myself)  are raising funds to help students pay to attend this year's overnight field trip to the Balclutha in May.

Ulloa's 5th graders will learn about and train to be a sailor in the year, 1906. They will work together as a team, learning to depend on each other and not necessarily the adults in their lives (i.e. teacher, parents). Solving problems through communication and understanding when to ask for support, our students will learn a variety of skills such as tying knots, utilizing 24-hour time, cooking and preparing their own meals, and putting together certain parts of the ship.

All the proceeds raised will go towards the admission of all 88 students and 18 chaperons. The cost is $95.00 per student and $42.00 per adult. This comes to a total of $8,355. We believe the S.F. Maritime Museum will provide a scholarship to our classes alleviating approximately $4,200. Due to previous fundraising efforts, we only have a need of $3,000 this year! Will you please help us get to this goal?

Any student who has participated in the Balclutha overnight program will state that this is the most memorable event they participated in during 5th grade. I have asked high schoolers what they remembered about 5th grade and the first word off of their lips was, "Balclutha." Student's from previous years have written in the ships logbook:

"The day was rough and hard. We had to row a boat, and clean out the tub which was gross. We washed the dishes and basically it was just rough, hard, and FUN."

"I really enjoyed my experience at the Balclutha. I really liked rowing and raising the ensign...I also liked it when the captain told us about her grandfather...I learned a lot about the ways to hand a flag."

"The days are short and the nights are very long. In the day, my crew and I accomplished building the bosun's chair, and important part of the ship. That took us almost 4 hours! In the night, it is kind of hard to sleep. It must have been difficult."
