"WE SHALL OVERCOME!"
UP, or Unlimited Possibilities - is a New Hampshire based non-profit organization that serves people both nationally and internationally. UP was started by Melissa's dad and godfather. Melissa has served on the board for many years. Their mission is "...helping eliminate social injustices by providing financial support and direct service."
The Hannon Boys - Graham, Luca and Mike -are hoping to go on UP's service trip to Mississippi titled "We Shall Overcome". We will depart on May 28th and return June 8th.
The mayor of Jackson, MS, Chokwe Lumumba,
wants Jackson to become the most progressive city in the US and to be a model of inclusion. We hope to contribute to his vision in a small way.
The trip will include engaging in Community Conversations with elders who lived through the Civil Rights movement and neighbors of Medgar Evers', visiting the Civil Rights Museum and 5+ days on direct service projects in Jackson and the Mississippi Delta. These projects may include helping individual families and organizations, service in soup kitchens and food pantries etc. Plans are being finalized as we write this. We will update the page as projects solidify.
The funds raised will be used for food, transportation and lodging (there will be homestays whenever possible) for the three Hannon Boys. UP also contributes monitary resourses to those being served.
In 2019, Graham leaves for college! (yup, can you believe it?) The world is big and there is so much need. We feel it is essential for our children to learn that they are a part of something much bigger than themselves. Giving back and caring for others is part of their responsibilty as members of society.
We will be eternally grateful for any donation, no matter how small! Those being served will benefit, but not as much as our boys.
Lastly, this is a surprise for the boys. If we reach our goal we will sign each and every name of those of you who donate on a card which we will present to them.
