Support vulnerable UFSA families during COVID-19

United for Success Academy is a public school in Oakland, California that strives to take care of our students and families. In ordinary times, our beautiful community school offers food pick up, laundry machines, and a health center with services available to both students and families. As we are a Title 1 school, all of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and supper at school.
Like so many others, our school is currently closed to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Many of our families are already struggling to make ends meet and, for some, this has put an additional strain on access to food, income, ability to pay rent and utilities, and necessary services. Over the last two weeks, teachers have called each of our students' families, to identify their needs and connect them with as many existing resources as possible. We are helping them apply for unemployment and Covered California, when eligible, helping them apply to other grants for undocumented families, helping them get to our district Monday and Thursday food distribution, and offering delivery when needed.
Additionally, at least two of our families lost their homes and all of their belongings in an Oakland fire on March 19th, and another seven UFSA students are already experiencing homelessness this school year.
The teachers and staff at UFSA are holding this fundraiser to ask for your help. As a school community, we are raising money to provide the following:
1) Financial assistance to particularly vulnerable families (fire victims, homeless, etc).
2) Financial assistance (particularly for rent) for undocumented families who are experiencing reduced or no work. Because they are undocumented, they will not qualify for unemployment insurance, and are excluded from stimulus checks.
3) Financial assistance to families who have applied for unemployment but need support in the interim.
Any amount you can contribute would be deeply appreciated. Every dollar raised will go directly to families who need support right now. For transparency, a small committee, approved by the staff will disburse funds as equitably as we can to families based on their need and availability of funds.
